Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists that highway construction activities will be occurring this weekend, May 9-12, 2008, in Allegheny County. Below is a summary of the major closings and restrictions.
Motorists should plan their travels accordingly and be prepared for highway work zones. Slow down and be safe. Parkway East
Friday-Monday, May 9-12, 2008
· No inbound work is scheduled on the Parkway East this weekend.
· Outbound (eastbound) single and double lane closures (one lane open in the work zone) from the Edgewood Swissvale Interchange (Exit 7) to the Churchill Interchange (Exit 10A) from midnight (later start to minimize impacts on Penguins and Pirates fans exiting home games) on Friday night, May 9 continuously through 5 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2008. Concrete patching, paving, bridge deck work, tree trimming, signage, drainage and other improvement activities will be performed.
· The outbound off-ramp to Greensburg Pike (Exit 9) will be closed from midnight on Friday, May 9 continuously through 5 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2008. Traffic will be detoured to the Churchill Exit 10A, taking Churchill Road (Route 2104) to Route 130 (Beulah Road) to Penn Avenue (Route 2110) to Graham Boulevard back to the Greensburg Pike. Concrete patching and other improvements will be performed.
· The outbound off-ramp to Route 8 (Exit 8B) to Wilkinsburg will be closed from midnight on Friday, May 9 continuously through 5 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2008. Traffic will be detoured to the Churchill interchange (Exit 10A), taking Churchill Road (Route 2104) to Route 130 (Beulah Road) to Penn Avenue (Route 2110) to the inbound on-ramp, reentering the inbound (westbound) lanes of the Parkway East back to the Wilkinsburg exit. Concrete patching and paving will be performed.

Route 885 Boulevard of the Allies
Friday-Sunday, May 9-11
- The inbound (westbound) Boulevard of the Allies (State Route 885) will be reduced to a single lane this weekend from the Birmingham Bridge to I-579 (Crosstown Boulevard) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County. The left inbound passing lane will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 9, and will remain closed continuously around-the-clock through 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 11. The lane closure is necessary as crews begin work to repair inlets and mill and overlay the Boulevard of the Allies. The Boulevard of the Allies work is included in the I-579 Crosstown Boulevard improvement project currently underway.

Route 28
Saturday, May 10
- Blasting (pre-splitting) in the rock fall area along Route 28 south of the Route 910 Hamar interchange (Exit 11) in Harmar Township, Allegheny County, will resume, weather permitting, on Saturday, May 10, 2008.
- The blast will occur at approximately 9 a.m. on Saturday. As a safety precaution during the blast, a brief approximate 15-minute traffic stoppage will occur on Route 28 and Route 1001 (Freeport Road) in both directions beginning at approximately 8:55 a.m. Northbound traffic on Route 28 will be stopped at the Blawnox exit and southbound traffic will be stopped at the Route 910 interchange. In the event the temporary closure on Route 28 occurs longer than anticipated, Freeport Road will be used as a detour route. If necessary, some intermittent traffic stoppages may also be expected during the day after blasting occurs to remove debris from the hillside.

- Northbound Route 28 remains a single lane around-the-clock from the Hamar Interchange to the Creighton Interchange through early June.
- Northbound Route 28 (Allegheny Valley Expressway) to Springdale/Cheswick at Exit 12 in Springdale Township, Allegheny County, is closed also around the clock through late May 2008. Signs will be posted to guide motorists during the closure:
Suggested Detour:
- Continue on northbound Route 28 to Exit 12A (Pittsburgh Mills)
- Make a left onto Mills Mall Boulevard
- Reenter southbound Route 28
- Exit southbound Route 28 to Springdale/Cheswick
