Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists that highway construction activities will be occurring this weekend, May 30-June 2, 2008, in Allegheny County. Below is a summary of the major closings and restrictions.
Motorists should plan their travels accordingly and be prepared for highway work zones. Slow down and be safe. All activities are weather permitting.
Parkway East
· Outbound (eastbound) single and double lane closures (one lane open in the work zone) from the Edgewood Swissvale Interchange (Exit 7) to the Monroeville Interchange (Exit 10B) will occur from 9 p.m. on Friday night, May 30, through 5 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2008. Concrete patching, bridge deck work, drainage and other improvement activities will be performed.
· Inbound (westbound) single left lane closure (one lane open in the work zone) from Churchill Interchange (Exit 10A) to the Edgewood/Swissvale Interchange (Exit 7) from midnight on Friday, May 30, to midnight on Sunday, June 1. Bridge and barrier repairs and drainage improvements will occur.
· The inbound (westbound) off-ramp at the Wilkinsburg Interchange (Exit 8) to Route 8/Ardmore Boulevard will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday, May 30 continuously through 5 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2008. Traffic will be detoured to the Edgewood/Swissvale Interchange (Exit 7), reentering the outbound lanes back to the Wilkinsburg Interchange. Resurfacing will be performed.
· Lane closures will occur on the on-ramp from northbound Route 30 (Ardmore Boulevard) to the inbound Parkway East from 9 p.m. on Friday, May 30, continuously through 5 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2008. The ramp will remain open to traffic. Tree trimming operations will occur.
Full Release: PARKWAY EAST LANE CLOSURES CONTINUE THIS WEEKEND
I-579 Crosstown Boulevard
- The northbound I-579 ramp to eastbound Bigelow Boulevard (Route 380) in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, will be closed this weekend, May 30-June 2, 2008. In addition, northbound I-579 will be reduced to a single lane from the Center Avenue off-ramp to the Veterans Bridge. The ramp closure and lane restrictions will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 30 and continue around-the-clock through 5 a.m. on Monday, June 2. The closures are necessary as crews continue work to mill, concrete patch, resurface and rehabilitate the ramp. Signs will be posted to guide motorists around the closed ramp. The suggested detours are listed below:
o Northbound I-579 off-ramp to Bigelow Boulevard:
- Take 7th Avenue exit
- Continue to Grant Street
- Turn left (south) onto Grant Street
- Follow Grant Street to 6th Avenue
- 6th Avenue to Center Avenue
- Take left (east) onto Center Avenue to Washington Place
- Turn left (north) onto Washington Place
- Follow Washington Place to eastbound Bigelow Boulevard ramp
Full Release: I-579 CROSSTOWN RAMP TO BIGELOW BOULEVARD CLOSED THIS WEEKEND
Route 28
- No blasting is scheduled in the Harmar Township area at this time.
- The on-ramp from Route 910 to northbound Route 28 (Allegheny Valley Expressway) at the Harmar interchange (Exit 11) in Harmar Township, Allegheny County, will be closed around-the-clock this weekend, May 30-June 2, 2008, weather permitting. Contractor crews will be performing concrete patching on the ramp. The closure will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday night, May 30, and will continue around-the-clock to 6 a.m. on Monday morning, June 2. Signs will be posted to guide motorists during the ramp closure.
o The posted detour will be:
§ Southbound Route 28 to the RIDC interchange (Exit 10)
§ Exit and make left onto Gamma Drive
§ Re-enter northbound Route 28
Full Release: NORTHBOUND ROUTE 28 ON-RAMP AT HARMAR CLOSED THIS WEEKEND
I-79
- Single lane southbound from I-279 split (Exit 72) to Neville Island Bridge (Exit 66)
- Guide rail repair: Intermittent, short-term single left lane and shoulder closures will occur on I-79 on Saturday, May 31, in both directions between 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the following locations:
- Crafton Interchange in Crafton Borough.
- Between the Wexford Interchange and the Butler County line.
- Brief 15-minute stoppages will occur in both directions on I-79 between the rest areas and the Bridgeville interchange (Exit 54) on Sunday morning, June 1, to allow crews from Odyssey Communications to conduct fiber optic cable maintenance. Two stoppages are expected sometime between 6-10 a.m. Sunday.
I-279 (Parkway West)
- Inspection activities will occur at the following times and locations on the Fort Pitt Bridge:
- May 31-June 1 (Saturday and Sunday mornings): Crews will be inspecting the upper bridge deck, cables, arch and truss. This work will require an inbound (northbound) single right lane closure on I-279 (Parkway West) from the Route 51 exit through the inbound Fort Pitt Tunnel to the City of Pittsburgh end of the Fort Pitt Bridge from 6 a.m. to noon both days.
Forbes Avenue/Boulevard of the Allies
· Forbes Avenue (Route 2108) is reduced to a single lane from Moultrie Street to McDevitt Place (approximately 2,500 feet) around-the-clock through late August 2008 in the Oakland area of the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County. Traffic on Forbes Avenue is required to stop at the merge point with traffic from the Parkway East off-ramp (traffic from the Parkway East will be free-flowing).
· The bridge that carries the Boulevard of the Allies over Forbes Avenue is also closed for replacement through this fall.
