Vino Volo offers wines by the glass, tasting flight or bottle (to go) and a pleasant way to pass the time while waiting for a flight or when your flight is delayed. I recently spent some time in the Philadlphia International Airport (PHL) Vino Volo. I enjoyed my flight of syrahs, although it was a little on the pricy side, and they paired well with the smoked salmon small plate. Pleasant conversation can also be had at the bar in this location, and there are also tables for those so inclined. We at eXpect delaYs will definitely be visiting Vino Volo again. - Gus

SAN FRANCISCO, California, June 27, 2008 – There’s nothing fun about waiting around in an airport. Unless of course, that airport happens to have a Vino Volo wine tasting room. Vino Volo is changing the way people travel by offering a sophisticated respite where travelers can taste great wines, enjoy small plates, and unwind in plush leather lounge chairs right next to their boarding gates. “I actually plan to be in the airport earlier than required so I can enjoy the relaxing break provided by Vino Volo,” confessed one customer. “Great service, food and wine…the best airport experience I’ve had!” raved a guest. Another stated, “You are an oasis of tranquility. I’ve always wondered why good choices are so limited at US airports…you’ve changed that. Please open more!”

Vino Volo has arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). This will add to the list of highly successful locations Vino Volo currently operates. Nationwide you can discover great wines at the Vino Volo in Washington DC’s Dulles International Airport’s (IAD) Concourse C, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s (SEA) Central Terminal Marketplace, Sacramento International Airport’s (SMF) Terminal A, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport’s (BWI) Terminal A, New York’s JFK International Airport’s (JFK) Terminal 8, and Philadelphia International Airport’s (PHL) B/C Connector.

Each Vino Volo store combines a cozy wine lounge and restaurant, a tasting bar, and a boutique wine retail area into a sophisticated, post-security retreat for air travelers. “Vino Volo is a completely new concept in wine retail and travel. We provide a unique wine tasting opportunity for air travelers looking for a place to spend their time before boarding,” said Doug Tomlinson, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Vino Volo. “We have completely reinvented the pre-travel experience at the airport by offering our guests a comfortable refuge while allowing them to taste and buy extraordinary wines at all price points. We select what we think are the best wines in each price category and organize them into tasting flights.”
Vino Volo (derived from “wine flight” in Italian) offers hand-selected wines from around the world by the glass, in themed tasting flights of small pours, and by the bottle for retail customers to take home or have shipped. The first Vino Volo debuted in September, 2005 at Washington DC’s Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Vino Volo plans to open several dozen more stores in airports across the country in the next five years. Each Vino Volo store will be approximately 1,000-2,000 square feet and will offer air travelers:
- a sophisticated retreat from the hectic airport environment
- fun and interactive wine tastings
- small-plate gourmet food pairings, with a packaged “to-go” option
- wine and wine-related merchandise to take or ship home
Customer service is a cornerstone of Vino Volo’s strategy, and Vino Volo invests heavily in educating its talented staff to make wine approachable. A highly trained team of Wine Associates helps guests explore and enjoy Vino Volo’s wines. The company also has a patented tasting framework to ease customers through the wine discovery process. Vino Volo is redefining service in airports, recently ranking #1 in customer service among over 900 airport stores mystery shopped, and winning the highly coveted airport industry award for “Highest Regard for Customer Service” in both 2007 and 2008.

Every Vino Volo location offers elegant small plates to pair with the wines. Diners enjoy items such as locally produced artisan cheeses, dry cured meats, and smoked salmon rolls wrapped around crab meat drizzled with crème fraiche. All of Vino Volo’s dishes are available for guests to enjoy in the lounge or to carry with them onto their flight.
Vino Volo’s focused approach to wine is visible in its list of 25-40 hand-selected wines organized into themed tasting flights of two or three glasses each, including a “Sommelier Series” tasting flight of two extraordinary wines. The list of wine flights rotates regularly. The following are examples of the tasting flights that might appear on the menu:
- World Value Reds – value reds from Spain, Chile and Australia
- California Kings – regal Cabernet, Merlot and Zinfandel from California
- Shades of White – top picks for Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio
- Sommelier Series – two of the finest reds from Bordeaux and Napa Valley
- World Noirs – Pinot Noirs from around the world - New Zealand, California and Burgundy
- Great Lakes Whites – a selection of Michigan’s best whites
- Summer Whites – northern Rhone favorites of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier
- Celebration Sparklers – outstanding selections of festive bubbles
Additional featured flights highlight local wine regions:
- Washington DC store: Taste of Virginia – local favorites that would make Thomas Jefferson proud
- Seattle store: Yakima Valley Whites – stellar selections from Washington wineries
- Sacramento store: Sierra Reds – Zinfandel, Syrah and Barbera from the Sierra foothills
- Baltimore store: Mid-Atlantic Tour – three great wines from Mid-Atlantic wineries
- New York store: I Love New York – top picks from Hudson Valley, Finger Lakes & Long Island
- Philadelphia store: Brotherly Love Blends – selections from three Pennsylvania wine regions

Every wine selection is available by the taste, by the glass, by the bottle, or in a tasting flight, with prices ranging from $6 to $14 per glass or tasting flight, up to the first class splurge flight “Sommelier Series”.
Wines are also available through Vino Volo’s website at www.vinovolo.com. In addition, Vino Volo offers two wine clubs “American Treasures” and “Wines of the World” for enthusiasts who delight in specially selected hard-to-find wines to arrive in their homes monthly or quarterly. Standing behind the Vino Volo team is a group of highly-credentialed investors and advisors with over a century of combined experience in retail, hospitality and wine that include the founder of Ravenswood Winery, the founder of Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker, and the CEO of Jamba Juice, among others. Each member of this group sits on a formal Advisory Board and actively consults to Vino Volo on its development and execution. “Taste, Inc. DBA Vino Volo” is the California-based legal entity behind all Vino Volo operations.

It's soon going to be worth
the trip to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport just for the food.
With Anderson's Frozen Custard (also famous for “Beef on a Weck”)
and the Anchor Bar (the “Home of the original Buffalo Chicken
Wings”) coming in about a year, you just need to make a quick trip to the airport to enjoy some of
Buffalo's most famous food.

Buffalo, NY (May/June 2008) -- Anderson's, Villa Pizza,
Checkers, Freshens and even The Anchor Bar will now have a permanent
place at the airport, so travelers can enjoy their famous wings.
These restaurants are joining the menu at the Buffalo Niagara
International Airport as part of a sweeping concessions makeover that
will include a sit-down food court. The new food court will be
situated just beyond the new security checkpoint in the East
Concourse. These restaurants should be available for your enjoyment
in about a year. Anderson's will find a home in what is now Jake's
Bistro & News, near Gate 21. "We want to provide a great
airport experience, but also make it a hometown experience,"
said Nicholas Biello, chief operating officer of Delaware North's
Travel Hospitality Services division. The 10-year-old airport's
security checkpoint is also getting a $7.2 million relocation and
expansion as part of the changes.

Delaware North, which
oversees food and retail services at more than 30 airports worldwide,
conducted an in-airport survey to determine the best menu mix. Work
is already under way to create the Blue Zone, a bar/restaurant that
will target passengers using Gates 1-4. New dining options will also
be available for those travelers and visitors not able or wanting to
pass through the security checkpoint.

Contract extension results
in new concepts for the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport's customers.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (June 3,
2008) - Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services, one of
the world's leading airport food and retail providers, announced
renovation completions at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. The renovation
project began in February of 2007 after the company inked a
seven-year extension with the City of Phoenix Aviation Department.

Through the renovations,
Delaware North introduces five new fresh and exciting concepts for
travelers at the airport. These include an Ocotillo Sun restaurant,
Round Table Pizza, Phoenix All Stars bar, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
and Paradise Bakery & Café.

Ocotillo Sun, a casual
dining and family restaurant opened in June of 2007 in a pre-security
section of the airport. That same month, Round Table Pizza opened in
the main concourse of the aiport.

Delaware North opened
Phoenix All Stars Sports Bar in November 2007, a local concept which
received inspiration from other sports bars operated by the company.

Renovations and
enhancements continued into 2008 with the opening of Coffee Bean &
Tea Leaf and Paradise Bakery & Café in January of 2008.

"One of our core
philosophies at Travel Hospitality Services is to provide travelers
with a wide array of choices so they can select the tastes and
flavors they enjoy," said Travel Hospitality Services president
Matt King. "We've put that into action at Phoenix Sky Harbor
Airport and believe these new renovations add to the guest experience
at the airport."

Delaware North has managed
food and retail at the airport since 1986 and these new concepts
replaced previous Delaware North operations. All operations can be
found in the airport’s Terminal Two.

Park and Fly Package Offered at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott Makes Summer Travel a Breeze
Note: According to the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott web site, the price is slightly different than as stated in this news release, with prices starting at $109. An important detail left out of the press release and the hotel web site is the length of time that one is allowed to park. We called the hotel to check it out and were told that one would be able to park for two weeks. We also spoke to central Marriott reservations, and we were told that one could park 8 business days, up to 16 days depending on location, and prices vary depending on date of departure. We recommend that you call the hotel prior to booking to confirm that you are able to park for the full duration of your trip. Also note that the Marriott is located about 5 miles from the Pittsburgh International Airport but shuttle service is provided by the hotel. Ask for the "Park here, fly there" package when booking. - Gus

Press Release

AirTran shows tremendous gain

Nine airlines increase passenger traffic

Myrtle Beach Direct Air announces more flights

PITTSBURGH, PA (June 5, 2008) – Nine airlines at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) reported an

increase in passenger traffic in April 2008 compared to April 2007, according to the April 2008 Scheduled Airline Traffic

Report, prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Of those, AirTran Airways led the charge with an impressive 40

percent growth – an increase of more than 13,000 passengers.

AirTran had a total of 47,937 passengers in April making it the fifth-busiest airline at Pittsburgh International Airport for

the month, accounting for 6.6 percent of the total passengers. Compared to April 2007, AirTran gained a total of 13,704

passengers (47,937/34,233; 40.0 percent increase).

AirTran added additional Florida flights to Ft. Myers, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando. The airline has reported growth

over each of the past 15 months.

“AirTran’s success represents the positive changes we are seeing at Pittsburgh International Airport,” said Allegheny County

Airport Authority Chief Executive Director Bradley D. Penrod. “AirTran was our first low cost carrier here and its

persistence is paying off. Additionally, other carriers have realized increased passenger numbers.”

Another such airline is Myrtle Beach Direct Air. While its total passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport is

modest, Myrtle Beach Direct Air reported a 10.1 percent increase in April (2,013/1,828; 10.1 percent). The airline has just

added two flights per week beginning in June.

Pittsburgh’s response to Myrtle Beach Direct Air’s three-day-per-week service has been so positive that they are adding on

two more days bringing the service up to 5 times per week. Their fares start at $99 each way between PIT-MYR. They will

operate 737-400 and A330 aircraft. Flights can be booked today at www.myrtlebeachdirectair.com or call 1(877)-432-DIRECT

(3473).

“Myrtle Beach Direct Air has increased service since starting at the airport in March 2007,” Penrod said. “Although it is a

niche market, it is providing an important service to our customers.”

May 20, 2008: The annual JD Powers
study of overall airport satisfaction looks at large, medium and
small airports, rating airports on factors including airport
accessibility, baggage claim, check-in/baggage check process,
terminal facilities, security check, and food and retail services.
This year, customer satisfaction is down significantly. And somewhat
surprisingly, satisfaction with airports is lover than satisfaction
with other travel components, such as hotels, rental cars and even
airlines (but not by much).

How do they rank?

Large Airports:

Best: Philadelphia International
Airport, McCarran International Airport, Orlando International
Airport
Worst: Minneapolis / St. Paul
International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, Seattle –
Tacoma International Airport

Medium Airports:

Best: Chicago Midway International
Airport, LaGuardia International Airport, Memphis International
Airport
Worst: Oakland International Airport,
San Jose International Airport, Portland International Airport

Small Airports:

Best: Dallas Love Field, Houston Hobby
International Airport, San Antonio International Airport
Worst: Tuscon International Airport,
Albuquerque International Sunport, Austin-Bergstrom International
Airport

Pittsburgh International Airport ranked
below average in the small airport category, but stayed out of the
bottom 3.

Other interesting information found in
the survey is:

-The number of passengers checking bags
